This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical body horror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story starts when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that come with most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
