The megacity Awakens to Toxic Smog Post Diwali

Tuesday brought citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with exposed to dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "alarming" category.

Alarming Air Quality Levels

Multiple areas of Delhi registered an AQI over 500, which equals ten times the healthy threshold recommended by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15-20x exceeding safe limits.

Fireworks Restrictions and New Developments

For the past four years, officials had enforced a total prohibition on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that blankets the metropolis as colder weather approaches.

Yet earlier this year, the current city administration petitioned the supreme court to request a easing of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – which have been criticized by environmental experts as being only about 30% less polluting – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Legal Decision and Implementation

Despite concerns of medical and ecological activists, judicial authorities complied with the request, specifying that green firecrackers could be ignited during designated hours throughout the festival.

On Monday night, there was extensive flouting of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.

Several monitoring devices throughout the city registered pollution peaking around midnight to the most severe measurements recorded during Diwali in at least three years.

Regional Implications

The proliferation of fireworks during Diwali also triggered a controversy with bordering Pakistan, with officials in Pakistani Punjab province partially attributing worsening atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on pollutants coming from neighboring India following the events.

Long-Standing Pollution Crisis

Extremely elevated concentrations of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have remained as a serious challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the situation showing no improvement.

Around the festival period, the levels of dangerous particles in the air has been documented to shoot up to seventy percent above the worst readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was formerly regarded as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Multiple Contamination Factors

This crisis in the capital is attributed to a convergence of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, building projects, garbage fires and haze from crop residue ignition in nearby regions of Punjab and Haryana.

Throughout these areas, farmers routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, generating hazardous pollution that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as cooler air sets in.

Medical and Economic Impact

The economic and health consequences on the nearly 33 million people living in the Delhi area is enormous, according to multiple studies.

The contaminated air causes elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can result in oncological diseases.

The pollution is estimated to be responsible for ten thousand early fatalities annually in the city.
